History of the Shark Company

Shark is a name synonymous with high-quality products for the home, especially smaller household appliances and cleaning solutions. Originally called Euro-Pro, the brand which is now known as SharkNinja, was founded in Montreal in 1994. In 2003 it settled in Needham, Massachusetts which is just outside of Boston (1).

In 2017, the company turnover was more than £1.5 billion. SharkNinja’s products are made in Asia by a workforce of around 1,700 staff members. As it currently stands, SharkNinja has over 15 offices in 8 countries worldwide. And it has an impressive 150+ products that it sells all over the world.

According to a J.D. Power US Vacuum Satisfaction Study in 2015, Shark vacuums were rated “Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Upright Vacuums, Two Years in a Row” (2). The brand prides itself on making innovative products. But at the same time, their focus is always on the consumer.

What makes Shark Vacuums so Popular?

Let’s look at why so many people have bought Shark vacuums.

Innovative Vacuum Cleaners

In 2008, the team behind the Shark brand expanded. They overhauled their portfolio and moved from “opening price products” to a firm focus on innovative products.

For a long time, Dyson vacuums had dominated vacuum cleaner sales. But by 2014, Shark had a 20% share of the US vacuum market (3). They have emerged as a good competitor. And now, they have over 550 patents (4).

Their latest vacuum technologies include DuoClean, PowerFins, anti-allergen seal technology, and their self-cleaning brush roll.

Customer Satisfaction

Shark’s primary focus is on the customer. They care about what the customer wants from their products. And they listen to feedback from their customers.

They survey their customers before developing new vacuum technologies. This is so that they know what the consumer wants, i.e. what will give them the best cleaning experience. And this way, Shark can foresee any problems and prevent complaints further down the line.

Shark’s self-cleaning brushroll was only developed after they’d surveyed over 1,500 people. They took the time to ask what issues people had with pet hair and long hair getting wrapped around the vacuum head.

Plus, all SharkNinja products are designed as multi-functional. They want to reduce the number of appliances that people have cluttering their homes.

Finally, Shark offers a free (up to) 7-year warranty on their vacuum cleaners (5).

Ease of Use

Shark want their products to be easy to use. They don’t want your vacuuming to be a chore. Rather, Shark vacuums are designed to be user-friendly and intuitive, doing some of the hard work for you.

Consider the J.D. Power study from 2015 referenced above. On a scale of 1,000 points, the average overall customer satisfaction with an upright vacuum was 794 points. Shark topped this segment with a score of 832 points.

This study also showed that Shark performed well in 3 of the 6 factors. These were ease of use, features, and performance.

Competitive Price

Shark aims to combine innovative products with economical prices. You can benefit from their technologies which will improve your vacuum cleaning experience without it breaking the bank. You should consider them alongside other brands like Dyson as an affordable option.

For example, this Shark Rotator upright vacuum has 1000s of positive reviews on Amazon. And it retails for around $250 – not too expensive for a best-selling vacuum that offers innovative technology.

In the UK, Shark will sell you their vacuum at a lower price if that price is matched on one of their approved retailer’s websites (6). In the US, you can get a 10% discount for signing up to their emails, and a $20 reduction if you refer a friend.

Also, look out for deals and promotions. We bought one of their cordless best-sellers in a Black Friday deal for nearly half the price! And they’ll often throw in free gifts. Finally, you don’t have to pay the whole price in one go. You can buy your Shark vacuum over several months, at no extra cost (7).

Quality Products

Shark states that its products offer quality as well as functionality. They take the time to develop new technologies so that they are of a high standard. As we said above, the 2015 survey found that they did particularly well in terms of performance.

The UK website says that newly designed upright Shark vacuums have “more suction power than any other upright vacuum cleaner brand”. This is from looking at the UK upright vacuum market as of December 2020. The test, IEC62885-2 Cl. 5.8, looks at the performance of vacuum cleaners for household use (8).

Types of Shark Vacuum Cleaners

There are 4 main types of Shark vacuum cleaners that we’ll be looking at upright, stick, robot, and handheld.

Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Shark Rotator Professional Upright Corded Bagless Vacuum for Carpet and Hard Floor with Lift-Away Hand Vacuum and Anti-Allergy Seal (NV501), White with Red Chrome
Upright vacuum cleaners have their handle or wand attached to the main body of the vacuum. In one unit, you’ll find the motor, filter, dust bin, and vacuum head all connected. You then hold the handle whilst pushing the head in front of you to clean.

This type of vacuum tends to be heavier than other types. But, this also means that the suction power is better and you’ll be able to do deep cleaning of all your floors.

The brand is very proud of its powerful upright Shark vacuum. Most are corded but there are also cordless models. Shark’s upright vacuum cleaners come with their Lift-Away technology. So as well as your floors, you can use it for cleaning stairs and in small spaces such as the car.

  • Easy storage
  • Offers deep cleaning
  • Heavy
  • Tends to be noisier

Stick Vacuum Cleaner

Shark HZ2002 Corded Stick Vacuum Vertex Ultralight DuoClean PowerFins with Self-Cleaning Brushroll, Removable Handheld, 0.32 Dry Quart Dust Cup Capacity, Cobalt Blue
Stick vacuums are similar to upright models in that they have a tall handle that is connected to a vacuum head. But the powerhead tends to be smaller, as does the dust bin capacity. This type of vacuum is lighter and more compact than the upright.

As they’re more lightweight, stick vacuum cleaners are a good option if you want to quickly clean up dirt and debris in your house. And if your house is on the smaller side, they’re a great option for a convenient, fast clean. But you can also get Shark stick vacuums with a deep cleaning mode for those areas that need it.

A stick Shark vacuum cleaner is available in both corded and cordless. And unlike handheld vacuums, you won’t need to bend over to clean messy floors or around tight corners.

  • Easy storage
  • Lightweight
  • Smaller dust bins for storing dirt
  • Less powerful suction power

Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Shark AV1010AE IQ Robot Vacuum with XL Self-Empty Base, Advanced Navigation Mapping, Wifi & Alexa, Multi-Surface Brushroll, Carpet & Hard Floor, Multi-Stage Filtration, for Pets, Dander & Dust, Black
Robot vacuum cleaners are the latest advancement in cleaning technology. You don’t need to actually operate the vacuum yourself. You can set your robotic Shark vacuum to clean for you whilst you’re not even there.
Robotic vacuums are normally made for bare floors, so you’ll need to make sure there’s nothing that can get in their way. They do have sensors which means that they shouldn’t bump into your furniture or fall over the edge of the stairs.

Most robotic vacuum models allow you to control them with an app. If you’re short of time and really don’t like cleaning, this type could be the best Shark vacuum for you.

  • Time-saving
  • Automatic
  • Not as good on tight corners
  • Not practical for cleaning up smaller bits of dirt and debris

Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

Shark WV201 WANDVAC Handheld Vacuum, Lightweight at 1.4 Pounds with Powerful Suction, Charging Dock, Single Touch Empty and Detachable Dust Cup
Handheld vacuum cleaners are small and compact. If you’ve got a smaller house, and/or want to use your vacuum in small spaces, in the car or at the office, they’re very easy to move from one place to another.

They can be either corded or cordless. Some Shark vacuums of this type have a WANDVAC system. This allows you to connect a wand to the vacuum and then it becomes a stick vacuum.

  • Portable
  • Easy to clean inside car
  • Suction power not as great
  • Dust bin capacity tends to be lower

Considerations Before You Buy a Shark Vacuum

Here’s what to consider before you choose the best Shark vacuum for your household.

Special Features

First, when looking at what new Shark vacuum you’re going to buy, consider what special features it has. So you need to think about your household, in terms of who’s in it, size, etc.

The features include: sealed air system, DuoClean, LED lights, Lift-Away, CleanTouch, and self-cleaning brush roll. So if you have pets, the self-cleaning brush roll will really help you to handle pet hair. If anyone has allergies, the sealed system traps 99.9% of dust and allergens.

Check how heavy the vacuum cleaner is. If it’s something you want to use every day, you don’t want it to be difficult to move around. Upright vacuums tend to be bigger and heavier than say stick or handheld vacuums.

For example, this is one of the lightest Shark vacuums at under 3 pounds. But this upright Shark navigator lift-away vacuum weighs 13.7 pounds.

Bin Capacity

Consider the dust bin capacity of the vacuum cleaner. Part of this will be related to the size and weight. So bigger upright vacuums will tend to have greater capacities than smaller stick or handheld vacuums.

The dust bin capacity is important in terms of how much you’ll be using your vacuum. And how often do you want to have to empty it! The larger the bin, the less you need to worry about this.

For example, this navigator pet plus upright vacuum has 3XL dust bin capacity which equates to around 3 liters. Whereas this rocket corded stick vacuum has a bin capacity of just 0.31 quarts.

Think about how much you can afford to spend on your Shark vacuum cleaner. There is a range of different price options for Shark vacuums.

For example, this Shark navigator lift away vacuum costs around $160. But this stick model will cost you more than twice as much.

The Best Shark Vacuums Of 2021

We’ve spent lots of time researching the best Shark vacuum cleaners. We’ve looked at customer feedback, technical specs, and product descriptions. You’ll be able to see for each type of Shark vacuum what specific features it has, how well it performs, and what it weighs.

1. Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional Upright Vacuum (NV356E)

This upright vacuum from Shark has everything you need to keep your home clean. It works well on hard and carpeted floors and has an impressive 2.2 quarts capacity for the dust bin. So you won’t be wasting time constantly having to empty it.

This Shark Navigator Lift-Away is a powerful upright vacuum that you can use everywhere. The cord is 30 feet long so covering your floors is easy. And you can transport it to use in the car.

Finally, you get all this for a good price!

What We Like

This vacuum is very versatile. The stick separates from the vacuum body and extends to a 5-foot hose so you can easily clean curtains or your stairs. And the Lift-Away pod turns it into a cordless vacuum, meaning you can clean with it anywhere

Great Suction
Customers were really impressed with the powerful suction on this upright vacuum. They found that it picked up dirt and dust that previous vacuums hadn’t, and this was on both carpet and hardwood floors.

Swivel Function
Shark promises that their vacuum has “advanced swivel steering”. And lots of users agreed that this was a great feature. They loved that hard-to-reach places were easily cleaned.

What We Don’t Like

Several customers found that this vacuum was difficult to use for a long time and move around a lot. And this was due to its weight of 13.7 pounds. If this is a concern for you, then another pick might be a better option.

Additional Specs

Weight 13.7 pounds
HEPA Filter Yes
Bin Capacity 2.2 quarts
Cord Length 30 feet
Accessories Included Pet Power Brush, Crevice Tool
Additional Features Lift-Away facility, Anti-Allergen Complete Seal technology,Swivel Steering

2. Shark Cordless Anti-Allergen Pet Power (IZ363HT)

Every pet-owner needs this vacuum cleaner. Or any household that has someone with long hair for that matter! It really is a great product for cleaning up the hair on both hard and carpet floors.

And it also has an anti-allergen complete seal for trapping the hair and dust as it cleans.

There’s no hair wrap on this Shark vacuum. Instead, the PowerFins technology means that the brushroll is kept clean and hair-free. It doesn’t get clogged – so no matter how much hair you have to suck up, it’ll carry on working until you’re finished vacuuming.

What We Like

No Hair Wrap
Customers can’t get over how well this vacuum works on floors, rugs, and even the couch, where there’s lots of hair. And yet the vacuum head doesn’t get tangled with it. So no awkward hair to unwrap from the roller.

Many users commented on how easy this Shark vacuum cleaner is to move around. They loved how effortless it was to use the vacuum all around the house.

Removable Hand Vac
As well as being lightweight, you can convert this vacuum into a hand vac. So cleaning any pet hair up in your car, on the stairs, or on the couch is a breeze. And in this setup, it’s easy to empty the bin.

What We Don’t Like

Doesn’t Last That Long
Some customers were disappointed with how long the battery lasts. Shark says that this stick vacuum cleaner has 50 minutes of battery life. But some found that depending on what mode they used it in – boost/hand vacuum/etc. – it didn’t always last this long.

Additional Specs

Weight 7.2 pounds
HEPA Filter Yes
Bin Capacity 0.34 quarts
Cord Length Cordless
Accessories Included 8″ Crevice Tool, Anti-Allergen Brush, Pet Multi-Tool, Dusting Brush, 8″ Crevice
Additional Features PowerFins technology, Anti-Allergen Complete Seal technology

3. Shark Impact Stick Vacuum (IX141)

Modern busy households will benefit from this stick vacuum from Shark. You can clean everyday dirt and debris with this lightweight, cordless hoover.

And if you regularly get mess from the kids in the car, you’ll love that you can convert it into a handheld vacuum in seconds. Use it for up to 40 minutes runtime and then simply pop it onto charge with the included charger so it’s ready for your next clean.

What We Like

Dirt Ejector
Customers loved the fact that emptying the bin was done in the flick of a lever. The CleanTouch dirt ejector makes this task effortless and keeps your hands from getting dirty.

LED lights
Users commented on the LED lights that are located on the front of the floor nozzle. If you’re cleaning in darker areas – say under the couch – you can see where to clean and make sure that you’re not missing any dust!

With no cord and a lower weight, reviewers found this vacuum great for tackling day-to-day mess all over the house. They didn’t think that it felt like a chore to use this vacuum, even when they used it often.

What We Don’t Like

Lack of Storage
This was the main downside of this stick vacuum for many users. They would’ve liked some sort of stand or wall mount. Instead, they had to improvise and find somewhere to lean the vacuum when not in use, which meant it got in the way.

Additional Specs

Weight 7.5 pounds
HEPA Filter No
Bin Capacity XL dust cup
Cord Length Cordless
Accessories Included Pet Multi-Tool, Crevice Tool, Li-Ion battery charger
Additional Features CleanTouch technology, MultiFLEX technology

4. Shark IONFlex 2X DuoClean Ultra-Light Cordless Vacuum (IF251)

Lots of us prefer cordless vacuums – they’re easier to get out and to use. The downside is, you only clean half your house before the battery dies. But not with this cordless stick vacuum because you get two batteries! So you’ve more than enough to clean your whole house in one go.

And Shark promises that their MultiFlex technology gives you “floor-to-ceiling versatility”. You can reach under furniture with the flexible stick, or use it in its handheld setup to clean above the floor.

What We Like

Battery Life
Several users liked that they didn’t run out of battery life. With 2 batteries, they could always have 1 as a backup and ready to use if they were doing a lot of cleaning in one go. And there are handy battery light indicators so you’ll know how long you’ve got left.

DuoClean Technology
Customers loved this feature which combines a bristle brush with a soft roller. This means that both fine dust and larger bits of debris are efficiently vacuumed. And this works on carpets and bare floors.

Freestanding storage
Lots of customers were happy with how this cordless vacuum could be stored. You can fold the vacuum so that it is compact and stands on its own. So it takes up less space in your home and can be carried around easily.

What We Don’t Like

Small Dust Cup
Some reviewers found that with longer cleaning jobs, the dust cup filled up too quickly. It’s easy to empty. But if you don’t want to have to do this as often, you might want to look at a model with a larger bin capacity.

Additional Specs

Weight 3.8 pounds
HEPA Filter No
Bin Capacity 0.3 quarts
Cord Length Cordless
Accessories Included Anti-Allergen Brush, Pet Multi-Tool, Duster Crevice Tool, Li-Ion battery charger and 2 Batteries
Additional Features DuoClean technology, MultiFLEX technology

5. Shark Rotator Lift-Away DuoClean Upright Vacuum (LA502)

This corded vacuum is ideal for deep carpet cleaning. It’s got a dual cleaning system and a powerful suction ability. These two features combined will dig out even the most embedded debris.

And it’s got a HEPA filter system that is sealed. So if you have allergy sufferers, you can be reassured that this vacuum will capture 99.99% of dust and allergens. Finally, there’s a Lift-Away option which means you can use it anywhere in your home or car.

What We Like

PowerFins Feature
Customers were pleased with this feature which they felt really gave their carpets a deep clean. The DuoClean PowerFins ensure that the roller has nonstop contact with the floor. Shark promises that they pick up more dirt than their original DuoClean nozzle.

Self-Cleaning BrushRoll
If you have pets, you’ll benefit from this accessory. Users with dogs found that this powerful brush picked up pet hair but it didn’t get wrapped on the roller.

Different Settings for Floor Types
This vacuum cleaner has a button so you can easily switch between cleaning on bare floors and on carpets. Customers liked this handy feature as they moved around the house from room to room. And there are minimum and maximum settings for suction power too.

What We Don’t Like

Can’t Store All Accessories
Some users were annoyed that although you get 3 accessories with this vacuum, there are only 2 spaces on it to store them. They’d have liked an extra space so that all 3 attachments could be stored and transported around the house as they cleaned.

Additional Specs

Weight 14.5 pounds
HEPA Filter Yes
Bin Capacity 0.89 quarts
Cord Length 30 feet
Accessories Included Pet Multi-Tool, Crevice Tool, Self-Cleaning Pet Power Brush
Additional Features DuoClean PowerFins technology, Lift-Away facility,Anti-Allergen Complete Seal technology, Swivel Steering

6. Shark IQ Robot Vacuum

“Forget about vacuuming for up to a month”. This is Shark’s pledge on their robotic vacuum. Not only does it do your vacuuming for you. It also has a base that self-empties and holds up to 30 days of dirt and dust.

Shark’s robot vacuum knows when its power is about to run out. It’ll return to its base to recharge. And although it’s only small, it has powerful suction to ensure that your carpets and hardwood floors are deep cleaned.

What We Like

Home Mapping
Customers found that the home mapping feature took a little time to work efficiently. But once the vacuum had mapped their homes, it worked well and they were able to select which rooms they wanted cleaning.

App and Voice Control
This robot vacuum can be controlled with the Shark App, or with voice control using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. So users liked the fact that they could control the vacuum from anywhere in the house, or if they weren’t at home at all.

Good Coverage
The IQ Navigation feature means that this Shark product cleans more areas than standard robotic vacuums. It cleans in rows and moves from room to room. Customers were impressed when comparing it to the coverage of other robot vacuums that they’d owned.

What We Don’t Like

Several reviewers commented on how loud they found this vacuum. They said that it was noisier than they’d have liked it to be, particularly on hard floors.

7. Shark UltraCyclone Pro Handheld Vacuum (CH901)

Compact, lightweight, and yet great suction power. This handheld Shark vacuum ticks all these boxes and more. You can easily use it to clean around your home and elsewhere to pick up small and large debris.

You don’t even need to get your hands dirty as it has a CleanTouch dirt ejector for emptying the bin. And with a built-in Lithium-ion battery, you’ll get solid battery life and a high standard of performance.

What We Like

Users were satisfied with how well this Shark vacuum worked for the price. They found it to be very affordable and definitely worth buying for easy, day-to-day cleaning.

UltraCyclone Feature
Shark have worked hard to design a handheld vacuum that has suction power as good as their upright vacuums. They’ve achieved this by fusing together 2 cyclonic air streams which give great suction power on every use.

Easy to Maneuver
At only 2.2 pounds, this is 1 of Shark’s lightest vacuums. Customers loved that they could move it around all over their houses with ease. And its portability meant they could use it in the car, office, or even the boat for those lucky enough to have one!

What We Don’t Like

Not as Good on Carpets
Users found that this handheld vacuum worked best on tile floors or for general hard floor cleaning. It didn’t seem to clean up dust and debris as well from carpeted surfaces. In particular, it wasn’t that good at removing pet hair.

Additional Specs

Weight 2.2 pounds
HEPA Filter No
Bin Capacity XL dust cup
Cord Length Cordless
Accessories Included Scrubbing Brush, Crevice Tool
Additional Features Ultra Cyclone, CleanTouch Dirt Ejector

8. Shark Vertex DuoClean Vacuum (AZ2002)

Shark’s “most powerful vacuum ever”. It has the DuoCLean PowerFins feature and the self-cleaning brushroll we’ve discussed above for the LA502. But in addition, it has what Shark calls HyperVelocity which provides their most powerful suction power yet.

And this Shark vacuum is even better in its pod form than the Shark Navigator LiftAway above. This is because the vacuum head has as much power in this mode as it does in its full mode. So even when cleaning those hard-to-reach areas, you’ll get the same great suction power.

What We Like

Glides Easily
Lots of customers found that this vacuum glided smoothly and effortlessly, especially on hard floors. Some commented that it was easier to use than a Dyson vacuum, which could be hard to push around, and picked up more dirt than the competitor.

Polishes Floors
Some users commented on how this vacuum left their hardwood floors looking like they’d been polished as well as vacuumed. Normally they could only achieve this by mopping the floors after using the vacuum. Here they had 2 jobs done in 1 go!

Bin Capacity
This vacuum has 1 quart (over 1 liter) dust bin capacity. Several customers commented on how they liked the fact that they could do a lot of vacuuming before having to empty the dust bin.

What We Don’t Like

This vacuum is powerful. But it weighs over 16 pounds and some users, particularly elderly ones, found it just too heavy. They couldn’t move it around as easily as they wanted. Consider a lighter vacuum if weight is an issue for you.

Additional Specs

Weight 16.38 pounds
HEPA Filter Yes
Bin Capacity 1 quart
Cord Length 30 feet
Accessories Included Dusting Brush, Pet Crevice Tool, Self-Cleaning Pet Power Brush
Additional Features DuoClean PowerFins technology, Powered Lift-Away facility, Anti-Allergen Complete Seal technology
