Overall, this flat mop has three settings depending on the floor type and dirtiness levels, allowing you to clean your floors in a much more personalized and easy way - without having to use bleach, soaps or other agents.
Should you just abandon the whole mop and bucket idea for once? Maybe! These all-in-one floor cleaners are much more convenient in many ways but on the pricier side.
Let’s dive into the review, shall we?
Setup Process - Easy to Assemble
Once you get the steam mop in the mail or at the store, it will require an easy assemble, which will take you less than a minute.
- Attach the handle
- Attach the mop portion
- It is easy to figure out which is the front and back.
That’s it. It’s just two steps you’ll have your new steam mop set up.
The water tank will give you a bit of a struggle. Opening it will require you to pull on it with such force you’ll be worried about breaking it. This initial struggle with it will have you wondering if this is the right way to do it. However, no worries, with a little bit of extra strength it does open and does not break.
When filling the jug, don’t overfill it. You’ll cause spillage. Also, don’t overfill the tank, you’ll notice the water height through its semi-transparent material. Make sure you don’t cause any spills. Of course, you’re still getting the hang of this new device, so no worries if you need some time to get used to it.
Mopping Performance - Dirt Picker Upper
You’ve set it up and you’re ready to give it a whirl around your floors. How good is it?
This is a product that works perfectly well on many different floor types (hard). The fact is the Shark Genius has performed very well on most types of hard floors, with very positive results.
Don’t forget to vacuum or sweep before using the mop. This will help ease the cleaning process. Pick up crumbs and dust. Sure, the instructions won’t let you in on this, but we will. The mop will not pick up fur or hair and it will definitely spread it around. Just take a few minutes to sweep before you mop and you’ll be good to go.
When starting out, especially on sealed wood floors, keep the mop set on the lowest steam level. This is recommended for hardwood or laminate. It’s easy and smooth to move around. You’ll work up a sweat nevertheless! But it’ll be worth it as soon as you see how it performs picking up dirt and debris quickly.
You’ll think your floors are already clean but give the mop a whirl and you’ll notice an extra sheen almost immediately. Take a look at the mop head, it will reveal that your floors were actually quite dirty because it will end up grayed by dirt and dust. This is a great sign, which reveals that the Shark Steam Mop works incredibly well, even if your floors looked clean to begin with.
If you have tiles at home, especially in your bathroom and kitchen areas, you’ll be curious to know how the Shark Steam Mop actually works. White tiles, especially, will reveal every dirt speck and the grout is noticeable in higher traffic areas.
Use the highest steam setting in tile floors – designed to sanitize and deep clean.
You will not notice a huge difference in the grout. In general, it takes much more work to clean grout and a steam mop is not the specific tool for this. However, your kitchen and bathroom will feel much more sanitized and clean that before.
You will need to go back and manually scrub a few spots, it will not remove every bit of mess.
This experience goes for both the kitchen and the bathroom. The Shark Steam Mop picked up every little bit of dirt and dust. However, on darker tiles, you may notice a film being left behind. No second pass of the mop will remove it. However, it will be gone the next day.
You’ll end up with a grayed mop pad, which is proof that the steam mop did its job. One complaint is the effort it took to scrub certain areas. You’ll notice you’ll really have to scrub and push hard to remove stickiness on the floors. For this, they included a Steam Blaster setting, when activated (flip the mop and press down) it shoots hot steam to the floor to help with extra stickiness and such messes. This will help but still did not get everything.
If you have larger areas to cover, you’ll most probably end up refilling the water tank. For a 300 square foot area, for instance, you’ll have approximately a quarter left when finished.
All in all, the Shark Steam mop performs very well.
Design – Gratifying
When you spend a considerable amount of money on a product you expect it not only to perform well but also to have an enjoyable and comforting design.

A round handle for the mop, which is different, however, this allows you to angle the mop easily and still have a nice comfortable grip.
While with this design, you won’t need to worry about having batteries and recharging, you might be worried about the cord holding you back. But don’t stress too much about it, the Shark having a cord is not an issue whatsoever and you’ll be able to keep it off the ground for most of the job. It is a 22.4-inch cord.
The Shark Genius Steam Pocket Mop includes two double-sided Dirt Grip pads – washable. It also includes a Fill Flask, which you might think is unnecessary, since you can use any other plastic container you have lying around at home. But when you try it, you’ll be grateful for it. The water tank opening is pretty small and the Flask’s size is perfect to comfortably is a perfect fit for the task.
