Do Laminate Floors Need a Special Mop?

Yes, they do! Laminate floors are durable, but they can be easily damaged. Because of that, it’s a good idea to use a specialized mop so the laminate floors stay looking new.

One good option is a dry dust mop. The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) and the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA) recommend this type to keep your laminate floors clean.

The WFCA also recommends damp mopping laminate floors every so often. But when you do this, you need to be careful.

Too much water can make laminate expand, which will damage your flooring. After you damp mop, make sure you dry the floor with a clean cloth so the water won’t soak in.

Damp mopping is different from wet mopping. To damp mop, you should use a flat or spray mop because these mops don’t need very much water to clean effectively.

If you use a sponge or strip mop, you will put too much water on the floor. This can be damaging even if you dry it afterwards.

Another option is to use a steam cleaner that’s specially designed for laminate floors. This type of steam mop will deep clean laminate floors like damp mopping.

In addition, it has a function that will dry the floors as it moves along, so you don’t have to worry about excess water.

Keep in mind

However, that the NWFA and the WFCA say you shouldn’t use any steam mops on wood floors, even if they’re sealed. The water from cleaning can damage those surfaces. The best you can do is to check with your flooring manufacturer before using any steam mops on your laminate floors.

How to Choose the Best Mop for Laminate Floors

Laminate floor mops come in many shapes, sizes, and designs. Here are some features to look for when choosing the best one for your house.

Different Models

There are many different types of mops, and each one has its pros and cons.

Flat Mop

Flat mops press flat against the floor, as the name suggests. They have heads that are either circular or rectangular, and they are excellent tools for cleaning out corners.

You can find models that either have reusable or disposable cleaning pads. Either way, these pads are generally made of soft microfiber, which is a blend of nylon and polyester. When you use a microfiber mop, the pad produces static. This, in turn, attracts and traps dust and grime.

Flat mops are great tools for surfaces that can’t handle much water, such as laminate flooring. They’ll leave a streak-free shine, unlike a string mop. Plus, they’re usually easy to store.

The only drawback is that they aren’t very good at removing stubborn marks. But for a general clean, microfiber mops are a great option.

This Microfiber Wholesale model is an example of a laminate floor mop with washable microfiber pads.

Spray Mop

Spray mops are the same as flat mops, but they have an extra feature. On the handle, they have a spray trigger so you don’t need to use a bucket for water. This is also useful if you don’t have much storage space.

This Rubbermaid spray mop has a trigger on the handle so you can wet the floor as you work.

Strip Mop

A strip mop looks similar to a traditional string mop, but the fibers are wider. Instead of strings, there are strips of fabric that connect to a wringer at the bottom of the handle.

String mops are easier to clean and maintain than string mops, but they’re not as absorbent. They are also better for scrubbing than flat mops.

Because they are made of synthetic fabric that dries quickly, you don’t have to worry about bacteria growing on the mop head. However, this type of mop tends to be less durable than other designs. That means you may need to clean and replace your laminate floor mop more frequently.

Steam Mop

As the name suggests, steam mops use the steam from heated water to disinfect your floors. This means you don’t have to use other chemicals like detergents or bleach.

Under the steam jet, there is generally a microfiber pad that will trap dust and grime as you clean. They also have a small tank attached to the handle to hold water for steam.

Some steam mops have a “dry steam” option. This means they still produce vapor, but there is so little water in it that it dries almost immediately. In addition, some manufacturers have designed models that will wipe up excess water as the mop moves. This leaves the surface dry and protects delicate flooring.

Those mops do exist for laminate floors. This is why we’re listing them in our review. But keep in mind that you should never use a steam mop on wood floors because the water from the steam can damage them.Or do check with your flooring manufacturer.

Spin Electric Mop

The head of a spin electric mop does just that — it spins! This helps you clean more efficiently because you don’t have to move the mop around as much. You can also clean many different floor surfaces with them.

Mop Heads

There are a number of options when it comes to mop heads, and each type has its own benefits.

Disposable or Reusable

Disposable mop pads or heads are very useful for small spaces or spot-cleaning. You simply mop up a little area, and then you can toss the head or pad and replace it with a new one.

If you have a large space to clean, however, reusable pads are the better option. They’ll last longer and work more efficiently since you won’t be throwing away lots of pads during cleaning. Plus, it’s more eco-friendly to reuse the mop pads!

For washable pads, microfiber is a great option. Microfiber mop pads won’t spread too much water over your flooring, and they dry quickly. In addition, they’re also very soft and hygienic!

The shape of your mop head will determine how easy it is to clean corners and tight areas. You can find mops that are circular, rectangular, and even triangular, so choose the shape that will best fit your house.

For the best maneuverability, pick a mop with a swivel head. That way you can easily move it around chairs, tables, and other obstacles.

Cleaning Path

When considering a mop head, think about how large an area you need to mop. A model with a large mop head will save you cleaning time because you won’t have to move back and forth as much. However, it will be harder to move in small spaces.

If you have a big area but you still want some flexibility, choose a large mop with a neck that moves 360 degrees. That way you can still maneuver around furniture, but you can also cover more area with one pass.

Mops for laminate floors can be made out of many different materials, including microfiber, synthetic fabric, cotton, or sponge.

Cotton is traditionally used for string mops. It’s a very absorbent material, so it’s great for cleaning up household spills.

On the other hand, microfiber, nylon, and other synthetic fabrics are excellent for scrubbing. They are also absorbent, but they tend to dry more quickly than cotton. That means they are less likely to grow mildew or smell bad. Microfiber is very durable but affordable.

Mop heads made of sponge also absorb a lot of water. Because sponge is great for scrubbing, you can easily clean up stuck-on dirt or other messes.

Wringing Mechanism

The wringing mechanism is the part of the mop that squeezes all the water out of the fibers. This keeps the laminate floor mop from soaking your floors with excess water.

You can find the wringing mechanism either on the handle of the mop or on the mop bucket. In general, home users find the handle version more versatile and convenient, so that’s the more popular option.

If a mop is self-wringing, it means there is a mechanism on the handle that will twist the mop head to remove the extra water. If the mechanism is on the bucket, you use the built-in lever to spin or squeeze the water out of the mop head. Self-wringing mops are usually easier to use than bucket wringers.

If you choose a spin mop, it will come with its own bucket that has a lever built in for spinning water from the mop.

Mop handles can come in a variety of different materials, including wood, plastic, aluminum, or stainless steel.

For deep cleaning, you need a sturdy handle so that you can push the mop back and forth without it bending or breaking. While cheaper mops tend to be made of plastic, wood or metal are better options for a long-lasting mop that can stand up to deep cleaning.

However, plastic does have some advantages. Many mops for laminate floors use plastic to create ergonomic handgrips. Curved handles or foam grips can make the laminate floor mop more comfortable to use. Manufacturers also use plastic for levers, buttons, or spray triggers.

Floor Cleaner

If you’re looking for a dry mop, skip ahead! This section is for you if you want to buy or make your own cleaning solution.

When you use a damp mop for cleaning laminate floors, you need to choose a cleaning solution that won’t damage the surface. A regular all-purpose cleaning solution can leave a residue behind that makes your floors look dull. In addition, it can even strip the finish off your laminate flooring!

Also, look for a laminate floor cleaner that does not require dilution. When you add extra water to a solution to dilute it, you increase the risk of damaging your floor.

Corded or Cordless

For electric mops, you have a choice between corded or cordless models. If it’s corded, you’ll need to have it plugged in the entire time you are using it. On the other hand, cordless mops can run on batteries while you work, but they’ll need to be plugged into an outlet to recharge afterwards.

All electric mops will have different cleaning mode options. This includes one that is specifically designed for wood floors.

On some mops, the swivel head or pad is removable. This makes it very easy to clean the mop for its next use.

While mops themselves don’t weigh a lot, the bucket of water that often accompanies them can. Look for a bucket that has wheels, so you don’t need to strain your back carrying it around the house.

Another good bucket feature is a plug in the bottom. With this, you can drain the water out easily without needing to lift the bucket to pour. Again, this saves some strain on your body and means you won’t splash water all over yourself while you empty it.

One last thing to look for is a splash guard on the bucket. This also prevents water from escaping the bucket while you empty it.

Extra Features

Many mops come with additional accessories such as an extra mop head or pads, or a free bucket.

While it’s nice to get free things, just remember that once the extra head or pads runs out, you’ll need to buy more. So make sure you check how much the replacements cost before purchasing a mop.

Some mops, like this Bona model, also have special ergonomic features. For instance, this model has a telescoping handle so you can reach farther to clean.

FAQs about Laminate Floor Mops

If you still have some things you’re uncertain about after reading this far, check out our frequently asked questions below.

How Often Should I Mop My Laminate Floor?

To keep your laminate floors looking new and shiny, you should mop regularly.

The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) says you should mop daily. However, the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA) says that only an occasional damp mopping is necessary.

As long as you don’t saturate your floors with water, just mop your laminate as regularly as you need to so that they look clean.

Is Swiffer Wet Mop Safe for Laminate Floors?

Yes, according to Swiffer, it is.

Swiffer says that their wet mop is perfectly safe for laminate flooring. Just make sure that water doesn’t pool on the seams of your flooring because that could damage the surface.

This is especially important to keep in mind if you use WetJet to spray cleaning liquid directly onto your floor. If you do this, some of the solution could drip into the cracks.

Therefore, it’s better to spray the cleaning liquid directly onto the mop pad. This way, you can gently moisten the laminate surface instead of drenching it (1).

Also, laminate flooring manufacturers don’t exclude expressly the use of the Swiffer cleaning solution. But make sure you check with the manufacturer of your laminate before using the WetJet cleaning solution since some cleaning products can damage the surface of the laminate flooring. And this may also void your warranty.
