Best Microfiber Cloths
Even the cleanest homes have dust. You’ll find it everywhere, from glass tables to television screens and windows.

And while these small particles seem harmless, they may actually contain bacteria, viruses and fungus (1).

To remove these microscopic materials, you need an efficient cleaning tool. Tools like dusters or cotton rags tend to just move dust around. And regular cloths might scratch delicate surfaces.

A microfiber cloth is soft enough to use on any surface. Its finer fibers can effectively trap dust, dirt allergens and microorganisms. And unlike paper towels, a microfiber cloth is eco-friendly.

But there are a lot of different options out there, and not all cloths are made alike. So, we put seven brands to the test to come up with this list of the seven best microfiber cloths.

Our Top Picks

What to Look For in a Microfiber Cloth

Microfiber cloths are not one size fits all! When searching for the right microfiber cloth, consider these features.

Types

Different microfiber cloths are designed for different household cleaning tasks. Here are a few of the most common:

Standard Weave: These are your standard microfiber cloths that can be found anywhere. They have a uniform texture, just like these Kirkland Signature Ultra High Pile Premium Microfiber Towels. You can use them for general cleaning, dusting and polishing.

Waffle Weave: These microfiber cloths have a square texture like a waffle. They’re great for buffing and drying glass, since they absorb water quickly. Some brands like this E-Cloth Window Cleaning Pack are designed specifically for window washing.

Micro-Chenille: This unique weave is often applied to wash mitts. These microfibers form “fingers” that extend beyond the wash mitt to hold dirt away from the surface. This protects surfaces from scratches while you scrub away.

Foam Core Microfiber Applicator: This type of microfiber cloth is often found in automobile stores and is used for waxing and buffing cars. It contains a block of foam covered with 250-300 GSM microfiber.

Polyester/Polyamide Ratio

A good indicator of the quality of a microfiber cloth is the ratio of polyester to polyamide. Polyester gives a cloth its structure, but the polyamide is what gives it absorption and density.

Cheaper microfiber cloths will sometimes be made with 100% polyester. These lack good absorption and drying power.

To find out the ratio of polyester to polyamide, look for a fraction on the packaging, such as 70/30. The 70 refers to polyester content, and the 30 refers to polyamide content.

A quality cloth will have a 70/30 or 80/20 ratio, like this Weiman microfiber cloth for stainless steel. Another example are Aidea Microfiber Cleaning Cloths: they have 83% polyester and 13% Polyamide

Denier

Something else to consider when choosing a microfiber cleaning cloth is the denier.

This refers to the size (diameter to be specific) of the fibers. Smaller fibers means your microfiber cloth can pick up more dirt and dust.

Microfiber is classified as lower than 1 denier, which is also equivalent to 10 micrometers. High quality microfiber towels will have denier below 0.5. But the best microfiber cloth will have around 0.13 denier.

Thickness (GSM)

With microfiber, thickness is measured in GSM or grams per square meter. It often refers to the density of the cloth, or the weight, depending on the manufacturer.

A higher GSM means a thicker, often softer cloth. Most good quality cloths will have a GSM of 250 or more. For everyday dusting and cleaning surfaces, a GSM between 200-350 is sufficient.

For example, the Buff microfiber cleaning cloth has 325 GSM.

If you’re cleaning a surface like glass, or a car, use a cloth with a GSM in the 600-700 range.

Usage

Most microfiber cloths are designed to be versatile, making them a great budget-friendly option.

If you have a unique or delicate surface to clean, it’s best to find a microfiber cloth designed for that purpose. For instance, these MagicFiber Microfiber Cleaning Cloths are specifically designed to not scratch glass.

Microfiber cloths also come in different shapes to make it easier to clean certain surfaces.

These Master Manufacturing CleanGreen Microfiber Dusting Gloves make it easier to clean in small and hard to reach areas.

This E-Cloth Home Cleaning Set comes with a variety of weaves and thicknesses to get the whole house clean.

How We Tested

Each microfiber cloth was tested for its absorbency, durability, and softness. Size was also a factor in our judging, and whether the size made cleaning easier or more difficult.

And of course, the biggest factor we tested was each cloth’s ability to remove dust and dirt.

TESTING INSIGHT:

We noted whether any residue or dust was left behind after cleaning, in order to judge its overall effectiveness.
