What is an Electric Mop?

An electric mop is a mop that’s powered by electricity to clean your floors.

Unlike a traditional mop, it doesn’t require a mop and bucket system. Instead, it sweeps and mops your floors using rotating or heating cleaning pads and onboard water.

Most electric mops have an all-in-one cleaning design. The cleaning pad, cleaning solution tank, and handle are built into one machine that’s powered through a power cord.

Are Electric Mops Worth It?

Yes, we think they are. Electric mops have many benefits.

  • First, they’re versatile cleaning tools. Electric mops can clean a variety of different floor types, including wood floors, vinyl, and linoleum flooring. However, keep in mind that electric mops with a steam function can only be used on specific flooring (avoid wooden floors). And it’s important to make sure the mop is only damp and not too wet when you’re mopping.
  • Electric mops also come with convenient and efficient features. For example, they have swivel steering handles that provide easy maneuvering while you’re mopping.
  • They also have a free-standing design with a 180-degree movement range from left to right. As well as a 90-degree rotation that makes it easy to clean in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Electric mops are also ecological because they clean with only water. So they don’t require any dangerous or harsh chemicals such as ammonia or bleach that can be toxic during cleaning.
  • Some electric mops also have a steam cleaning option to efficiently eliminate germs and bacteria. However, as we mentioned above, electric steam mops can limit the types of surfaces that you can mop.
  • Lastly, they’re safe to use. With electric mops, you don’t need to bend down or scrub the floors on your hands and knees. You can deep scrub your floors from a standing position with complete control over your electric mop. And this can prevent a lot of strain on your muscles while you’re mopping.

What to Look for in an Electric Mop

There are many different features, shapes, and sizes to look out for when you’re choosing an electric mop. Consider the following details to find the best electric mop for your cleaning needs.

accordion_icon

Types

Depending on your needs, there are four different electric mop types to consider.

Spin Mops

Electric spin mops have rotating cleaning heads that can provide a deeper clean for your floors. They’re also suitable for cleaning different floor types.

The cleaning head spins as you mop, so you don’t have to move your mop back and forth while you clean. So they can save you a lot of effort, especially when you’re mopping large areas.

For example, see this Shark Steam & Scrub Sanitizing electric spin mop.

Steam Mops

Steam mops use vapor from hot water to naturally clean and disinfect your floors. They have a built-in water tank and flat cleaning head that sits below the steam jet to trap dirt as you clean.

Unlike a regular floor cleaner, steam mops don’t need any cleaning solution. The steam from the hot water removes 99.9% of the bacteria and germs from your floor.

However, you should be aware that even the best steam mop shouldn’t be used on wooden floors.

For example, see this Bissell Powerfresh Deluxe steam mop.

Vacuum Mops

A vacuum mop, also called a wet-dry vacuum, combines two cleaning tools in one machine. It’s an electric mop with the added suction of a vacuum cleaner.

So you can vacuum your floors while you mop them with wet-dry vacuums. This can save you a lot of time, allowing you to get two chores done during the same cleaning session.

Some vacuum mops can also be used on carpets as well as area rugs. For example, see this Bissell CrossWave dry/wet mop model.

Robot Mops

Finally, a robot mop is a high-tech cleaning tool that can mop for you. These self-driving mops have a cleaning head and spray function that cleans autonomously.

There are many different types of robot mops and models available. For example, there are some models that you can control with a remote, buttons, voice control, or smartphone app.

Plus, they can have many features such as programmable cleaning times, different cleaning modes, and mapping capabilities. So they’re great for handling cleaning tasks if you have a busy schedule.

Consider your cleaning needs to find the best type of electric mop for your floors.

Corded or Cordless

Next, consider whether a corded or cordless model will be best for your cleaning. It’s important to note that both of these mop options will need access to a power outlet.

  • A corded mop needs to be plugged in while you’re cleaning. Whereas a cordless mop needs to be plugged in to charge in between cleaning sessions. For example, see this battery-powered cordless Gladwell electric mop.
  • If you don’t want a mop that requires plugging in, charging, or storing a power cord, you should consider a cordless mechanical mop.
accordion_icon

Water Tank

You should also consider the size capacity of the water tank. This determines how much water your electric mop can hold.

Electric mops with large tanks tend to be heavier than models with small tanks. But, they require refilling less often.

So, if you’re cleaning large areas, you should consider a mop with a large water tank. Otherwise, you might end up needing to refill your water tank several times during each clean.

Plus, you’ll also have to wait for your electric mop to reheat after refilling your tank each time before you can continue mopping. And this can add a lot of extra time to your cleaning task.

accordion_icon

Mop Pads

Finally, consider the different types of mop-pads and their features to find the right option for your floors.

Types

Electric mops have different types of detachable mop pads for an efficient cleaning experience. These pads attach to the base of the mop so they come into direct contact with your floor.

Some cleaning pads are sturdier and more efficient for specific cleaning tasks and stubborn stains. For example, if you have tile floors, an abrasive cleaning pad will be more efficient than a soft cleaning pad.

Whereas for hardwood floors, a soft mop-pad is the best option. These will protect your floor from scratches or damage.

Disposable or Reusable

Disposable cleaning pads offer a convenient cleaning process. After mopping, you can throw the cleaning pad in your trash and place a new one onto your mop-head.

However, disposable mop pads create a lot of waste. So they are a less environmentally-friendly option for cleaning.

Plus, using disposable pads can cost you a lot of money over time. Especially if you’re cleaning large areas frequently.

Whereas a reusable mop-pad is an eco-friendly and economical option. They attach to the base of your mop through velcro or clamps and can be cleaned in your washing machine.

Reusable mop-heads also tend to clean more efficiently. Although they do require more maintenance because you have to wring out and clean the pad after each use.

Plus, if you have large areas to clean, you may need to use several mop pads in one cleaning session. So you’ll need to have extra mop-heads available to clean with.

Extra Features

There are also extra features to consider when you’re choosing a mop. Some electric mops come with extra mop-heads, cleaning solutions, or other cleaning accessories.

For example, the O Cedar Microfiber Steam mop comes with an extra refill.

But, extra mop-pads will eventually need to be replaced. So you should also consider the price of replacement pads before buying your mop.

Many electric mops also come with ergonomic features such as telescoping handles that let you adjust the height.

So consider your cleaning needs to find an electric mop with the right features for your floors.

Care And Maintenance

Follow these care and maintenance tips to keep your electric mop cleaning efficiently.

  • Make sure you empty the water tank before you put your electric or steam mop away for storing. To do this, place your mop near a sink and open the lid on your water tank.
  • Then, lean your mop over the sink to empty the water. Allow all of the water to drain out of the tank before closing the lid.
  • Wait for your mop to cool before storing it. And also make sure all of the steam has been released.
  • Always keep your electric mop unit clean to prevent dust from collecting on the motor. To do this, regularly wipe down the exterior of your mop, handle, and other parts.
  • Make sure you wash and change your filters regularly with cold clean water. The filters on your electric or steam mop can get dirty quicker than any other part of your mop.
  • Regularly inspect the cleaning head as well as the mop pads for any dirt or debris build-up. A build-up of dirty residue can obstruct the cleaning pad’s adherence and cause dragging or skipping during mopping.
  • Most of the cleaning pads on electric mops are machine-washable. But, make sure to only use cold or warm water to protect the material from breaking down.
  • For the best mopping results, we recommend replacing your mop-pads every 3 to 4 months. Like any fabric, dirt, grease, and regular washing can lead to the fibers breaking down.

This can cause friction while you’re mopping, making it harder to push or pull your mop. When this happens you’ll need to replace your mopping pads.
