A mop that cleans and sanitizes simultaneously

Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop Review

What I Like

  • A spacious water tank for extended cleaning
  • Lightweight and swivel steering
  • Has a long power cord
  • Three adjustable steam settings

What I Don’t Like

  • Has a white body that’s prone to getting dirty
  • The plastic build isn’t so durable

While a vacuum cleaner certainly does a great job of keeping your house clean, it doesn’t give any additional treatment to the floors. For that, you need to rely on steam cleaners as these cleaning tools are made for multiple purposes.

Nowadays, steam cleaners come with a multitude of features, including sanitization capabilities. They can clean hardwood, tile, and almost all other kinds of floors. Moreover, most steam mops allow you to adjust the speed settings to clean floors around the house.

Plus, modern steam cleaners also offer above-floor cleaning, so you’re sorted for keeping every surface in the house spotless.

But does a steam mop have to be accompanied by many attachments to be reliable? Can an affordable steam mop be your go-to cleaning tool? To find this out, I reviewed the Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop, which is a handy tool for cleaning dirty floors and killing bacteria.

Unboxing and Installation: Takes a few minutes

Fortunately, you don’t have to do much in terms of installation as the steam mop comes pretty much pre-prepared. All you have to do is screw the body and handle in place. That’s it. You’re ready to mop.

If you’ve set up a steam mop before, this should only take a few minutes. However, if you’re not familiar with the different parts of a mop, you can refer to the instructions manual – which is quite detailed – to determine which parts go together.

Besides, the mop has a fragrance disk for deodorizing the space you’re cleaning. Inserting the scent disk into the mop is very simple as you merely have to slide it into its designated place.

Performance: Works like a charm

Before going deep into performance, let me just say that I’ve noticed quite a few similarities between the Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop and high-end models from the company. Thus, getting the PowerFresh at a lower price with the same features is quite a steal.

First off, the steam cleaner has a 12-inch mopping head that is big enough to cover a sufficient area at once. It can remove even the grimiest stains without a hiccup.

While you’re cleaning, an elastic band attaches the cleaning pad to the mop’s bottom. Once you’re done cleaning the room, you can simply remove the pad from the elastic to replace it. I think it’s probably one of the most straightforward replacement mechanisms I’ve seen on a steam mop.

Moreover, the Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop does not just clean; it also sanitizes your home, making it free of germs and bacteria(1). The steam cleaner has the ability to remove 99.9% germs from the floor and that too, without a single harsh chemical.

The best part about the PowerFresh’s performance – which isn’t found in some high-end models – is the adjustable steam settings. You can choose the low, medium, or high, depending upon the intensity of the stain.

More importantly, the steam mop comes with swivel steering. Thus, it’s relatively easy to move it under the furniture or other obstacles in the house.

A reviewer said that ‘this is the real deal’ because his house has never felt as clean as it did after he used the Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop.

Some people might feel that the mop lacks advanced features like some other models. But then again, it does the job, so why do you need the extra accessories?

Versatility: Almost all floors

You can use the Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop on marble, linoleum, ceramic, hardwood, and granite floors. In this regard, it’s almost like the PowerFresh Deluxe, which is more expensive but cleans the same kind of floors.

Also, you can insert the fragrance disks to keep your floors smelling good, along with looking clean. The mop head releases a gentle fragrance as you clean, giving a hint of freshness to your home.

Overall, the steam mop is versatile. Some users’ only issue was that it could not be used for above-floor cleaning, which is justified by the low price point.

If you’d like a mop that can do that, opt for the PowerFresh Lift-Off, which is an expensive upgrade of the Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop.

Durability: Prone to scratching

At the end of the day, the PowerFresh is still a budget-friendly mop, and you can’t expect it to have all features of your choice. Yes, it has excellent performance but lacks a bit in terms of durability.

Since the mop is white, it gets dirty very quickly. After cleaning your house, you may even have to clean the mop.

But that shouldn’t be a huge concern, considering you only have to wipe the central unit with a clean cloth to make the mop spotless. Nevertheless, it’s an added chore.

Secondly, the mop has a cheap plastic build that won’t stay in perfect condition for a long time. If you’re careful while using it, the mop can last for a few years. However, if it undergoes wear and tear, the steam cleaner won’t sustain the injuries with grace.

The plastic body is prone to scratching. Thus, you have to make sure you’re storing the mop properly after use.

Design: Very thoughtful

Bissell seems to have done almost everything right with this steam mop. Most importantly, the design is top-notch, making it suitable for most users. In terms of design, the large water tank is admittedly the best part of the PowerFresh.

It’s a 16-ounce tank that inserts into the central unit. Refilling it is as easy as filling a bottle, which is much simpler than some expensive models out there.

If you’re using the machine at low settings, you won’t even have to refill the tank while cleaning the house. It has sufficient capacity to clean the entire space in one fill.

Meanwhile, the Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop has a 23-feet power cord, which is long enough to clean the whole room without switching outlets.

In the words of a reviewer: ‘tall people rejoice.’ While most mops are designed for average-height individuals, the PowerFresh can be easily used by taller people.

Plus, the mop is ready for action in as little as 15 seconds. As soon as you put the tank back into the unit, it starts heating and reaches cleaning temp in about 15 to 30 seconds.

Attachments: Not too many, not too little

As for attachments, the Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop has just enough of them to help you clean your house without a worry. Sure enough, Bissell could have added a few more, but that would only raise the price point.

Currently, the PowerFresh comes with a soft microfiber pad for cleaning, a scrubby pad for tougher stains, two breeze fragrance discs, and a single carpet glider.

While the microfiber pads work well on tile flooring and wood floors, the carpet cleaner is suitable for rugs and mats. Besides, the scrubbing brush removes older or stubborn stains from the hardwood floor without scratching the surface.

Price: Value for money

The Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop is priced normally, which goes well with its cleaning performance. Although it doesn’t have fancy accessories and tech features, it indeed keeps the floor clean.

Competition: Shark Steam Pocket Mop Hard Floor Cleaner

The Shark Steam Pocket Mop gives the Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop a bit of a competition, owing to its flexible design. Like the PowerFresh, this steam mop sanitizes 99.9% of the germs in your house(2) and doesn’t use any harsh chemicals in the process.

Plus, it offers double-sized cleaning. You can use both sides of the cleaning head to clean the floors in one go. The mop head is fitted with reusable cleaning pads that can be washed manually or in the washing machine.

However, the Shark Steam lacks some features that the Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop has. These include fragrance disks and adjustable steam levels.

Also, the Shark Steam Pocket is more expensive than the PowerFresh but lacks specs that you can get in a more affordable steam mop.
